Here's what I don't understand about this picture. Why do I have a look of reluctance on my face, if I am in fact both the subject and the photographer?

In my opinion, the Porsche 908/3 (in Gulf livery) was one of the finest short wheel base road-racing cars ever built. Also known as "a lawn chair with 350hp", it was nimble, had a powerful AIR cooled flat-8 3 liter engine, and thanks to it's low weight and great balance, was very, very fast around the mountain roads of Sicily (re: Targa Florio).
